They say the only common denominator of all of your bad relationships is you. I’ve been running through the years of my serial monogamy, and I’m thinking deeply about each one. Each love, each predicament. They were and are multifarious in their gifts, and also in the pain they caused. A year ago, I broke up with my long-term partner after 5 1/2 years.

When I was pretty damn young, my father pointed out a mid-op transexual prostitute named Carrie. According to my father, she was the most popular prostitute in town. Monday was my birthday, and it made me think about my 18th birthday.
That day, my father had to work and he left me a note to tell me Happy Birthday and that we’d go to dinner that night.

“Honey, you see that woman over there?” We were driving through a residential neighborhood adjacent to one of the worst streets in town. Many a Bad Thing went down on this strip of cement: murders, rapes, serial killings, public beat-downs by a rather infamous biker gang…you know, the daily stuff.
