Real Based

July 16, 2012 in Audiosmoker

A high school friend of mine went on to get a film degree from Academy of Art San Francisco and graduated over $100,000 in debt.

He worked graveyards stocking at a grocery store to try and lessen the damage it was doing to his and his parents’ respective pocketbooks, but as you can imagine, one can’t live in San Francisco and chip away at an ever-growing mountain of debt on a grocery stocker’s salary.

So during his junior and senior years, he worked a second job editing pornographic films to pay the bills.  Read the rest of this entry →

My Life in Song Lyrics

March 21, 2012 in Audiosmoker

The intricate sounds of a world-music tune, the rise of a note that expands to the provocation of an epic landscape, the soulful voice that takes you down South—any of these factors may give you pause as the music escapes your speakers. Read the rest of this entry →

All My Bitches Act Gay: The Politics and Poetics of the Based God

September 20, 2011 in Audiosmoker

In his short two years in the spotlight, 22-year-old Lil B has released thousands of tracks, declared the rap game over, recorded an entire concept album about how people should stop judging him for patronizing prostitutes, compared his appearance to that of Mel Gibson, Aretha Franklin, Paris Hilton and dozens of other celebrities, and received death threats for calling his most recent album “I’m Gay.”

Even though he’s not.

But if there’s one thing Lil B does with aplomb, it’s pissing off haters. Read the rest of this entry →

Music to Storm the Bastille By – Deux

July 14, 2011 in Audiosmoker

“The revolution, like Saturn, devours it’s own children.” – Georg Büchner

Two hundred and twenty two years ago, a crazy group of Révolutionnaires, led by the Three Musketeers, slipped up to the front of the Bastille, overpowered the guards, and blew the hinges off of the big wooden door with a pound of plastique that they acquired in exchange for six Louis, a day old baguette, and either a wheel of camembert or brie (depending on which account you subscribe to). Among those freed were political prisoners, religious leaders, probably a few pedophiles (because I can’t believe that modern U.S. Catholic priests were the only religious leaders to abuse children), and those who were incarcerated for printing and writing pamphlets. Other People’s Music

June 18, 2011 in Audiosmoker

mixtape – noun \ˈmiks-ˌtāp\: A homemade music compilation (usually on cassette or CD-R) that contains all your favourite tracks. Often you give such a compilation to the guy or gal of your fancy in hopes that it will help you win their heart.

The thrift store had a stack of new CDs. Amid The Best of Dave Brubeck and Enya (a thrift store CD staple) was a stack of burned mixtapes. Okay, so technically they were CDs, but to me these messy oh-so-meaningful compilations are always mixtapes because that’s what I made when I was younger and was trying to impress a boy. OMahna Mahna

June 5, 2011 in Audiosmoker, Cultural Analysis

The “Mahna Mahna” song by the late Piero Umiliani was first heard in a regrettably chaste sauna scene in the Italian mondo film Sweden: Heaven and Hell, which “documented” sex and drug hijinks among Sweden’s youth. The song was a minor hit, but later achieved earworm status when it was popularized by the Muppets and Sesame Street.

Wordsmoker Anthropology – Name Your Theme Music

February 27, 2011 in Audiosmoker, Wordsmoker Anthropology

Who would remember Shaft (1971) without the title song by Isaac Hayes? Certainly no one with whom any of us would consort—that’s for sure. Would there have even been a Shaft (2000) to give Christian Bale the opportunity to polish up his villain act for American Psycho? One wonders how much more Charlie Sheen would have been able to get away with if he had a real theme song [seriously, don't click the preceding link] for that weekly atrocity that he stars in with Duckie from Pretty in Pink. The point is that theme songs are important. I have some theme music. You might have guessed that because I’m writing this anthropology. But mine varies depending on the situation. AudioSmoker–Deer Tick

January 13, 2011 in Audiosmoker

Beg, borrow, steal… oh, the things I’ve had to resort to for musical recommendations as of late! And yet, in the end, sometimes it comes down to “if you stumble upon a song you love on Pandora, maybe you should try listening to other stuff by the same band and you will discover that you think they are excellent and you’ll become obsessed with them and listen to a number of their songs repeatedly every day.” Read the rest of this entry →
