R.I.P. Whitney Houston

February 11, 2012 in Sad

I think the shock over her very untimely death is more to do with how early it came. I also think that as much as we knew of her troubled, recent past and her troubled, ongoing future, there was a part of a lot of people who quietly wished that she’d somehow get it together one more time and make a triumphant comeback of sorts. Because she actually had talent. No matter how much people could dismiss her for forsaking her soul roots, or for being a pop princess and selling out in sugar-caked movies, one thing is undeniable – she could sing. Very sad, indeed.

I don’t know what she died of, but seeing as she lost the thing that she treasured most, I’m willing to bet it was a broken spirit.

I couldn’t find the chapter in American Psycho that discusses Whitney Houston. So, in lieu of that which I maintain is a great piece of writing, I found the movie transcripts and this video clip:

    Did you know…

    that Whitney Houston’s debut LP…

    called simply Whitney Houston…

had four number-one singles on it ?

Did you know that, Christie ?

You actually listen to Whitney Houston ?

You own a Whitney Houston CD ?

    More than one ?

It’s hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks.

But the “Greatest Love Of All” is one of the best, most powerful songs…

    ever written…

    about self-preservation…

    and dignity.

It’s universal message crosses all boundaries…

    and instills one…

with the hope that it’s not too late…

    to better ourselves.

    Since, Elizabeth,

it’s impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others,

we can always empathize with ourselves.

It’s an important message. Crucial, really.

And it’s beautifully stated on the album.

If only the media made us feel this way after every soldier is killed overseas….

I certainly hope the press doesn’t bring up that vile canard about how her family forced her into a marriage with handsome, upstanding Bobby Brown to hide the fact that they were both gay, which would have been a disgrace to her famous, upstanding Christian family.

God forbid; she was a pop singer, a person with a beautiful gift that she squandered. I feel nothing for her. Those men and women dying and hurting and scarring for us thousands of miles away? I could never feel for a singer what I do for them.
