5 Second Movie Review: Woody Allen’s Midnight In Paris

August 26, 2011 in 5 Second Movie Review

To be able to write and direct movies like this, I might also marry my adopted daughter.

I need to see this. I spent a lot of time in Paris wandering around to see little-known places I came across in the biographies of the artists and writers of the 20s in Paris. I started each morning in the little bar at Ritz with the bartender who hated my French but enjoyed practicing his English. I let him make me Blood Marys while we butchered each other’s language.

@ Belltolls: I think you’ll like it a lot. The movie stands on its own, but the historical references and characters really make it fun. The opening three minutes is a montage of Paris that’s worth the price of admission.

    On the downside, no nudity.

No tits or cocks? Count me out.

There also might have been a bunch of subtle puns throughout the movie? I wasn’t really sure how to take them. Like, there’s a part where everyone’s talking about how tres bien it is to be in Paris, and then someone begins an unrelated conversation with the phrase “To be frank…”

And there’s a scene where Owen Wilson’s character is talking about meeting all these literary giants, and someone else pops in and asks what’s up with “all the idle (idol?) chatter.”

For some reason that last one had me really tickled. The people sitting around me started to get annoyed, actually.

    @ ofsmallthings:
Don’t mind my earlier outburst, I did actually see this movie, and I noticed some of the puns you mentioned. I was happily surprised at how much I liked this movie, considering I don’t know that I’ve ever seen anything done by Woody Allen ::dodges flying cats::

Also, first time I’ve seen Rachael McAdams in a role that made me think, “What a snooty bitch!”

I don’t get why everybody so loves this movie. To me it seemed like a pale remake of “Purple Rose of Cairo,” which I LOVE LOVE LOVED. Although I do like watching Owen Wilson.

    @ DieterTheMasseur:
I saw this movie not knowing a thing about it other than Owen Wilson was in it. I went in with the idea that if it sucked I could just see Fright Night, which started forty-five minutes after this one. I dunno, I liked it. Never saw Purple Rose of Cairo though.

@ ofsmallthings: Welcome. I have to admit that I missed most of the puns. I was probably admiring the lovely dresses or something.
