The Busy December Wordsmoker Social Calendar

December 5, 2010 in WORDSMOKER MEETUP

As you all know, after fall and spring, winter is among the busiest social seasons of the year. That’s why we’re bringing you two Wordsmoker events in the very near future. Please do not mistake this short notice as any sort of a slight; it all just came together in the past few days.

To begin with, we have the first ever South Florida Wordsmoker Meet-Up:

HOLLYWOOD, FLORIDA

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9th @ 7:30 p.m.

PRL Euro Cafe

1904-A Hollywood Boulevard

Hollywood, FL 33020

I don’t actually know how many Wordsmokers we have living in the South Florida area, so we may have to open this up to lurkers as well. If you aren’t local and haven’t already purchased your plane, train or bus ticket, travel may be quite costly. You’ll probably want to sell something valuable and come anyway. Why not stay overnight and enjoy our nearly tarless beaches and watch our talent-loaded, mediocre basketball team. Don’t worry, I’ve been to PRL. It’s not nearly as “artsy” as the link says that it is.

We also have the fourth of fifth Wordsmoker meet-up in New York. I’ve only been to one other, but I also wasn’t around in the early days.

NEW YORK CITY

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17th @ Not sure of the time but most likely around 7:30 or 8:00 p.m.

Somewhere in New York (Manhattan or Brooklyn probably)

Yes, I bought a ticket the other day to fly up and see my dear friends Gianna and Logan, but also to meet up with as many Wordsmokers as possible. I don’t have an idea for a location yet, so I’m hoping that some of you may be able to help me out and also attend. I will be staying somewhere near Williamsburg, but like many of you, I know how to get around in NY. (Actually I just have the HopStop app for my phone. Hopefully it’s still a viable entity.) When I was up there in January for my first Wordsmoker meet-up, there was a lot of talk of posting updates and writing up a piece after the event and so forth. Well, that never happened, so if this event seems as though it will be well attended, I will bring my laptop and air card. That way the attendees can take turns live blogging the affair. On the other hand, if no one shows, it could just be me drunkenly pounding away on my keyboard. Then the main difference between this and any other Friday night becomes mainly geographical.

I have a few tentative RSVPs for both events, so let us know if you’re coming in the comments or via our normal communication mediums. I await your telegrams. Also, please list some venue suggestions for the NY gala.

Look for future events in these exotic locations:

  • Dubai
  • Hong Kong
  • Prague
  • Stalingrad
  • Pyong Yang
  • Buenos Aires

And many, many more.

Sunday mornings are very difficult times. It’s the time of week when one has to debate whether one should go re-read what one wrote on a Saturday evening or even bother. And now this dilemma: NYC. WordSmoker in real life.

Okay. I’m in. But I haven’t had coffee yet.

As a nihilist/socialist/atheist however, I would like to vote for Manhattan. I don’t trust Brooklyn. But I’m flexible.

I have no thoughts on Florida and will not attend anything in Florida! (He says from proud, proud New Jersey.)

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/azirel-fallen/ Azirel Fallen

Talk to Twysted Mind he might be able to set you up with some of those exotic locals, especially Pyongyang if the Korea issue keep going. I vote for Amsterdam.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/dahlelama/ DahlELama

Well, I will not be able to attend either one of these for multiple obvious reasons which means I DEMAND PICTURES AND A WRITE-UP. None of this slacking that happened the last time around when all of the important people (points non-subtly at self) made it; I demand to know everything I missed and expect at least one upskirt shot, preferably of Rene.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/dahlelama/ DahlELama

On the bright side, I might be able to make the one in Stalingrad.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/belltolls/ Belltolls

That’s interesting that you are holding one in Florida. I have never been to The Gun State.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/nodebutante/ NoDebutante

I wish I could be there but, after paying to fly or park my car for the night (which would be the same cost just about), I’d have to sleep in a bus stop or my car. I hope it’s fun for you all, and I want to read all about it!

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/bigleggedwoman/ BigLeggedWoman

East Ventura, California. Right now. My pants.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/sidandfinancy/ SidAndFinancy

OK, I started a new job and Wordsmoker is not blocked here, like it was at the previous regime. Howdy, everyone!

Hope to see some of you at the NY gathering. Manhattan preferable, but I do occasionally venture to the outer boroughs. (Does Brooklyn even count as “outer” these days? In some parallel universe, it’s more inner than Manhattan, isn’t it?)

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/azirel-fallen/ Azirel Fallen

CB if you can hold a Florida one after Christmas Twysted & I would be able to attend since it currently looks like the Navy only intended to screw us out of Thanksgiving

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/militantrubberducky/ MilitantRubberDucky

I will be at the Florida one (obvs), but sadly can not make the NY one, as I have no funds nor anywhere to stay that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. I’d be willing to offer my first born, if that is an option; since I don’t plan on having any children, the joke would be on them. Next year though!

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/blix/ Blix

Welcome Sid&Financy! I might make the south Fla trip and take photos but I’m not trimming my pubes until my Wordsmoker momma (Booklookish,”Invite the crazy or funny ones”) chimes in.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/blix/ Blix

D’oh! I don’t know how to Chatsky…I have a password but Gmail isn’t cooperating. Last time I tried it was when Adam was running SLCoutsider…was fun.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/josiegroper/ josiegroper

Really?? A meet up in NYC while I am in CT??? Yes, I know I haven’t been active for a while due to circumstances in my life… but this has possibilities!!

  • http://www.pennydanger.com Penny Danger

I can make it to the Florida meet up…or is it a meat up? So this is a nice surprise. I guess MRD and Blix are going so it’s a party. I can’t wait!

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/sidandfinancy/ SidAndFinancy

@Blix Thanks for the welcome message! It’s actually welcome back, in my case. (I have the globally coveted early ’09 joined date — even attended a meet-up around this time last year — but then work started blocking the site.) Good to be back.

  • http://wordsmoker.com misslinda

Are you still looking for a location in NY? If it absolutely must be Williamsburg (you’re such a hipster, Chill), I suggest the beer garden:

    http://www.radegasthall.com/

Only problem with that is the mommy-and-me-I’m-so-cool-I-bring-my-behbeh-to-a-bar crowd may still be lingering at 7pm. If one of those snot-nosed little shits spills my beer I will be forced to glare condescendingly at its parents. As for Manhattan (where the good, decent people live), I’m throwing one of my neighborhood bars, Clandestino, into the mix because a) I’m lazy; and b) it’s exactly the kind of place where writer-types meet up and have deep conversations ’til the wee hours of the morning. And they have the best bar music in the City:

    http://www.clandestinonyc.com/

  • http://www.pennydanger.com Penny Danger

I spent two hours last night going through my closet and having my own little fashion show trying on various outfit combinations. I had forgotten about this cute little number in the back of my wardrobe, which would be perfect for the WS mixer.

While I was deciding on whether to wear diamonds or pearls with it, the phone rings. So I will now be out of town on Thurs. instead of at the Florida event. GRRRR. I was really looking forward to meeting y’all. :( Have some fun for me, people.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/gerbilsinlove/ gerbilsinlove

If anyone is interested in one of them furrin locales, I will be in Costa Rica the first week of March. Think of it – ziplining through the rain forest, horseback riding through the rain forest, snorkeling in tiny bathing suits…free booze because it’s an all-inclusive resort!

Otherwise, have fun at your fancy little meet-ups; I’ll be over in the corner sulking and fondling my new faux-fur-lined Christmas tree skirt.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/renesance/ Rene Sance

@DahlE: Your pic gets mine. Only sincere replies.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/mama-penguino-2-2-2/ Mama Penguino

@Gerbils: My sister keeps telling me I’m clinically depressed and I’m thinking I must be because your trip to Costa Rica makes me feel indescribably tired. All the packing, passports, currency exchanging, the humidity, the hangovers, etc. I was at a meeting last week that was filled to capacity with older people and all I could think about was my retirement: the newspapers I’d read, the crosswords I’d work, the cards I’d play in the afternoons, after my nap. I’m so tired.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/militantrubberducky/ MilitantRubberDucky

@Mama: An eight ball will cure all that ails you.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/whyamihere/ WhyamIhere?

I will not be at either event. That is because I am either a stick in the mud or I will be working on the evening of December 9 and I will be 1,261 miles away from Clandestino on December 17.

    I hope everyone has fun.

@MamaP: You need a warm beach, a book, and a goombay smash.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/5oclocksomewhere/ 5oclockSomewhere

@MamaP: It’s just winter. If I didn’t have the urge to lay under three warm blankets in my pajamas and completely disengage from all of life (and I do this), I wouldn’t know what season it was. And all these holidays. I’d rather them not.

However, I will be there Dec. 17. And I’ll smile. And drink. And be charming (of course). And I still vote for Manhattan. I’ll go with what MissLinda recommended.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/mama-penguino-2-2-2/ Mama Penguino

@MRD: I’m not much of a pool player, but thanks. (I get it, I get it!)

@Why?: Mr. Penguino and I have a date for tomorrow evening to play Checkers. (True story.) After, I’m going to retreat to a dark corner and gnaw at my wrists. What? Am I ready for the good samaritan home? What in the hell is wrong with me? If my mother were alive, I could call her and listen to her say in her uniquely sick and tired of your bullshit voice, “What the hell is wrong with you?” Am going to goombay smash link now . . .

@5: This has never happened to me before; I’ve always been immune to the winter thing. How do you people survive? Have I mentioned I hate Christmas?

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/fuldis-closure-2-2/ fuldis closure

But wait! San Francisco/Bay Area, anyone? I’m kind of pretty much sick of every bar I go to, so I’m hoping someone fresh and exciting will respond and suggest a venue.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/5oclocksomewhere/ 5oclockSomewhere

@MamaP: I’m writing something about dead mothers right now, actually. I need to finish it. I can’t find the hook however. I may be writing about religion. Or Thanksgiving. Or simply dead mothers.

Winter, however, will pass. Not gracefully nor with any real purpose, but it will pass. Sure, there may be trips to the emergency room along the way – winter is distinctly purposeful in that regard- but still it always leaves.

Of course, it always returns as well.

    I’m rethinking Florida.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/bjonston/ BJonston

Florida sucks. I’ll be there on the 9th.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/mama-penguino-2-2-2/ Mama Penguino

@5: Sent you a PM. Is it wrong that the event to which I’m most looking forward this season is my sister’s gallbladder removal on the 17th?

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/chillbearlatrigue/ Chillbear Latrigue

Is everyone cool with coming in their Wordsmoker Defense League uniforms?

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/mama-penguino-2-2-2/ Mama Penguino

@Chillbear: Only with a change of underwear.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/gerbilsinlove/ gerbilsinlove

Mama P: Well, we only pack enough for our carry-ons, the passports are in the fire safe ready to go, and there is no currency exchange! We’re staying at an all-inclusive resort this time and no money is needed, as everything is paid upfront. Weeeeeeeee……! The trip is from Norfolk to Dallas to Costa Rica – we’re there by 1:45 pm. Easy! Last year’s trip to Ecuador/Galapagos Islands, not as easy, but worth it, for the most part.

And anyone would be tired with the schedule you keep, lady. This cold weather is taking a toll on me, too; we’re not used to it here, and today we won’t even get out of the 30′s. It is bizarre – we had snow Saturday night. Unheard of. And I’ve been cleaning boyvomit off floors, walls, and toilets for two days, so that’s not making me feel good, either. Give yourself a well-deserved break and have some wine. And a hug from me.

  • http://www.pennydanger.com Penny Danger

Gerbs: It sounds like it will be a fun trip. Forget the trip, right now I could go for that the fur-lined Christmas tree skirt you were talking about previously. It sounds exotic.

    Enjoy Costa Rica!

  • http://wordsmoker.com misslinda

@Gerbils: I’m planning a trip to the Galapagos for next spring/summer, care to share what tour company you went with and any tips you wish you knew before you went?

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/gerbilsinlove/ gerbilsinlove

MissLinda: We did an eco tour, on a small yacht (which means rudimentary shower facilities and sleeping in bunks), with Gap tours. You’ll fly into Quito, Ecuador, and we took a few extra days before we flew to the Galapagos to see the city – it’s worth every bit of extra time and money to do that. Prepare for lots of flights; it takes two to get from Quito to the islands, and more than anything – get the medical/trip insurance. It takes six hours to get from the islands to Quito, unless you’re medi-vaced, and we found this out the hard way. More than anything, do not fly down there the day Chile has a huge earthquake; it could affect your trip significantly. It is indescribably beautiful, and I could go on and on about the wildlife and sea lions and blue-footed boobies and crabs…..

  • http://wordsmoker.com misslinda

Gap Adventures? I just went to Kenya with them this summer and thought they were fantastic, so happy to hear they do a good job in the Galapagos as well. One last question–when you say “rudimentary shower facilities” do you mean “no hot water” or “closet down the hall with a bucket of water and a sponge?” A cold shower I can almost deal with, but it still has to be an actual shower. I’ve got a mane of long flowing locks to wrangle and not having a hair dryer in Kenya was roughing it for me.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/gerbilsinlove/ gerbilsinlove

I mean, a trickle of water that may or may not last throughout your shower. As an eco tour, they are very conservative with their water supply! Also, if you want to dry your hair, head on up to the bow and let the wind blow mightily as you’re moving along to the next island. I have longish hair and it stayed in a ponytail for most of the trip – you’re almost always snorkeling or trekking, so it needs to be up, anyway. Makeup was unnecessary, as well. It was definitely a hippie trip, which suits me, and Olde Hippie, just fine!

I am so jealous of your Kenya trip! We want to get over there one day; our son just turned 13, so we’re thinking maybe when he’s a few years older? Were there a lot of shots? Was it a safari? I want to do a safari sooooooooo badly, but am severely needlephobic.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/azirel-fallen/ Azirel Fallen

@CB I’ll be in mine after christmas when I see ya!

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/kausaustralisandsaturn/ Worthless Emo

I represent Canada, blah blah blah

  • http://wordsmoker.com misslinda

Gerbils I pass out at blood tests so it doesn’t get more needlephobic than me, but I powered through the shots. I needed 4 of them, 2 in each arm. Totally worth the pain and the burning afterwards (yes, the burning afterwards….). You’re right to wait a bit before bringing your son on a safari, the younger kids I saw with their families looked miserable and fidgety, but the older teens were loving it. The Gap guides and drivers were really excellent, I would recommend them for a Kenya/Tanzania safari. The New York Times does a travel show at the Javits Center every year in February and Gap gives a 20% discount on all trips booked within I think it’s 3 weeks of the show with a coupon code. Saved us a bundle on the safari. I’ll send you the code when I get it this year.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/gerbilsinlove/ gerbilsinlove

I’m going to thier site to check out this tour! We only get one vacation a year, and travel time is tight, but I’m dying to get there. How is the political situation? Beware that Ecuador is not very stable right now politically! But oh, the Argentinian beef is delicious. And cheap – a $35 steak here is about $10 there. Yum.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/mama-penguino-2-2-2/ Mama Penguino

Gerbs: “We only get one vacation a year…” And you’re lucky to get that. What do you think this is? Europe?

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/gerbilsinlove/ gerbilsinlove

Mama P: Seriously! Every time we go somewhere, it’s those damned Europeans, bragging about their mandatory six weeks! They suck. We get one week, and because of DrGerbils’ job type, there is no such thing as paid vacation. If he doesn’t work, he doesn’t get paid. Period. We do get (non-paid) time at Christmas, but that’s spent going up to PA, which sucks balls, and I despise, so it’s not really vacation for me. It suckage time.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/mama-penguino-2-2-2/ Mama Penguino

@Gerbs: Oh, believe me, I know! I was reading some news story about a bunch of Europeans whining about getting only 4 weeks of vacation time and I wrote a high-toned letter to the editor giving them all a lecture about how fantastic 4 weeks is, blah blah blah. Motherfuckers never published it, of course. THEY FEAR THE TRUTH. Just kidding.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/notwavingbutdrowning/ notwavingbutdrowning

I’m in the Bay Area if there’s energy for a SF meetup.
Also I’ll be in Chicago for 3 weeks over the holidays. Any Chicagoans in the group?

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/mama-penguino-2-2-2/ Mama Penguino

    Wordsmoker meet-up–
    Geographical center;
    No room at the inn.

    Home, home on the range;
    No friends but an antelope.
    Fuck off, antelope.

    Your fancy parties–
    I wouldn’t come anyway.
    Snacking on sour grapes.

  • http://www.pennydanger.com Penny Danger

Very nice, Mama P. If you are home during those dates/times you can type online and virtually be a part of it, someone will have a laptop. You can get to work now stomping on some grapes for your own wine and live it up.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/ninahagen/ Nina Hagen

I like the Gun State – can this be done sometime when school is out?

S&F: Yes – Manhattan. Near my apartment. I spend half my life commuting and do not do it is the spare time.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/azirel-fallen/ Azirel Fallen

See CB we should do the South Fla meet up while schools are out for winter vacation! I vote for December 28th

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/geodejane/ GeodeJane

This schedule does not permit enough time for the necessary inoculations. Thanks but I must respond with my regrets.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/mama-penguino-2-2-2/ Mama Penguino

@Penny: I think I’m scheduled to have an online sex session with a man named Duke during that time period. J/K I can’t do online chat. The last time I did that was new year’s eve when I participated in the Wordsmoker Chatsy (sp?) session while chaperoning my then-14 yr old niece’s NYE party. Does anyone remember how at the end of the evening, one of the girls had made a boy curl up by the front door and cry? Really, folks, I’m not sure how the species has survived.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/gerbilsinlove/ gerbilsinlove

Mama P: As long as you’re smashing grapes, could you smash me some potatoes for a nice batch of vodka? I’ll cull my own limes, of course.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/mama-penguino-2-2-2/ Mama Penguino

@Gerbs: Why haven’t we done a road trip together yet? I have plenty of (paid) vacation leave, just no funds to go anywhere, but I do have my own Visa card for gasoline and Kwik Shop snacks.

  • http://www.pennydanger.com Penny Danger

I wanted to ask you about Duke, Mama Penguino. Do you know if he’s available for online Scrabble or Twister? I seem to be alright in the other departments at the moment. It must have been difficult for you to joggle the Wordsmoke Chatsy and the insane clown party simultaneously.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/gerbilsinlove/ gerbilsinlove

Mama P: I’m down for that. I have no job, so no paid vacation, but I do have a debit and a Visa card, which I should be able to use, Wikileaks hacker takedown be damned, and a comfy SUV with butt warmers in case we end up some place not warm. And a sun roof through which our flowing scarves can whip in the wind as we drive through sunny fields. BTW, WaWa has the best BLTs, my favorite travelling food. And caramel creams.

  • http://www.pennydanger.com Penny Danger

I see someone removed another letter from my posting above. I’ll be heading north for my road trip soon. I have some Scooby snacks for my dog, bottled water, and sugarless Bubble-Yum…I’m set. I was told “not to quit my day job.” Hey, don’t forget, the Wordsmoker meet-up at PRL Euro Cafe in Hollywood TONIGHT.

@All: Sorry for my absence today. BJonston is an interesting cat—and by cat, I’m using a retro-hip term and not at all implying that he is a feline. I’m going to hold off on writing anything about it until the NY meet-up in case it all ties together, but he didn’t disappoint.

And yes, I am hungover bad.
