Ohfuckingklahoma!

You know when you hear wingnuts talk about “the evils of socialized medicine” where abortions are performed during a tea break in the UK while you eat your crumpets laced with free methadone, or how President Obama is the modern day equivalent of Stalin because Stalin – like Hitler – were both Mexican-Kenyans with masterplans to enslave all God-fearin’ white folks? Point them towards the following, will you? Because if anything like the form you now have to fill out in Oklahoma when you want an abortion was even attempted anywhere in Europe (maybe with the exception of Italy, I’ll grant you that) then there’d be riots in the streets.

Here it is, all copied and pasted for your laughter-and-joy-filled perusal. My favorite part is this bit:

Pregnancy was a result of forcible rape: _________

You know, as opposed to the more popular “gentle and consensual rape” I hear so much about. Remember – the following answers to the following (honestly, they’re real) questions will be held by the State of Oklahoma forever. And you have to fill them out every time you want an abortion, which to me smacks of really taking the fun out of a medical procedure usually taken as a last resort of last resorts and after a great deal of thought. WHAT A BUZZKILL, EH?

Here we go. Enjoy!

If the people of Oklahoma had to fill out a similar form before they could conceive children, there would be no pregancies which could be terminated.

Apparently Oklahoma lawmakers do not think that abortion rights belong under the Right to Privacy.

For just a moment, I thought one said “Would interfere with the enjoyment of the mother.” This shit makes me want to get pregnant and abort the fetus myself on the steps of the Oklahoma state capital.

Aaah, Oklahoma. One of the multiple reasons I got the hell out when I could. True story: A liquor store I used to frequent there had a sign on the door saying “No Mentally Insane Persons Allowed.”

I was once near Okla. and I stopped and asked how far we were from the state line at a gas station/convenience store. Nobody could answer the question, it was like they’d never even considered it. It turned out we were five miles away from Oklahoma.

Mama: For some reason I thought someone was going to answer the joke.

Q: How come Texas doesn’t fall off and float away?
    A: ‘Cause Oklahoma sucks.

(This joke in no way implies that Texas does not suck. In fact Oklahoma and Texas might be sucking each other. Which is a sin.)

Another lovely story from Oklahoma. We made reservations at some hick motel next to a nice lake. I called to cancel, and the owner sounded so devastated that I said I couldn’t go because I had a bladder infection. As we concluded our call, Mr. Okie said “I hope your bladder feels better.” It was nice and sincere, but I still crack up whenever I remember it.

@Vaq: And here I was getting all excited about the possibly of a nice beach in south Kansas!

I have a 20-something cousin in Oklahoma. She voted for Obama and miraculously has not been stoned or burned for witchcraft.

Oklahoma is one of the worsts as far as batshit crazy goes. Based solely on the craziness of its state legislature, I’d say it probably is number one. A state is only as sane as its legislature.

There is a certain kind of Kansas person that drives to Monkey Island, Oklahoma to get married without a license. Okay, yes, my father did that once.

@BL: God, wasn’t that movie the best? Really hammered it home on all sides.

How lucky am I that all I had to do to get all my abortions was have my mom drive me to the clinic, climb a long set of stairs, pop positive on a pregnancy test, and hand over $350!
Way to go, Virginia – for once.

*I only had one. It was really that easy.

@Gerbs: I took my sister to Kansas City for an abortion in 1985 and she had the same experience. We walked into the clinic, which was set in a boring suburban business area on the Kansas side and I hung out at a mall while she was having the procedure and then I picked her up after. The real trauma came when we got back to our apartment in Manhattan, KS (we were college students at the time, living together), and she started bleeding heavily and her gyno, who was in with a die-hard Catholic woman gyno who refused to have anything to do with women who sought or who had had abortions, wouldn’t see her. I had to take her to the ER, instead. I really hate people sometimes.

Mama: I was all of 17, it was two days before I graduated, and I am ever thankful that I was able to make that decision with ease. That said, I barely remember my graduation, as it about 90 degrees, we were in navy blue robes, and I was bleeding like a stuck pig and about to faint. I don’t know how I made it to the stage to get my diploma. In a white skirt. I’m sorry your sister had such a horrid experience – I take it this gyno also didn’t dispense any kind of birth control, either. Of course.
