It’s Your Fault Your Kid is Disabled, You Filthy Harlot

February 23, 2010 in Patently Insane Statements

Last week, Virginia Delegate Bob Marshall (R-Manassas) said the following:

“The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children.”

Let me give you a little background on this guy.

In 1991, as part of the anti-choice/pro-life/complete asshole* movement, Bob Marshall co-authored the book Blessed are the Barren: The Social Policy of Planned Parenthood. In it, he and his co-author argue that Planned Parenthood was not only founded by advocates of eugenics, but it continues to exist in order to keep the numbers of black babies well below the numbers of white babies. Based on revised history, out-of-context quotations, and general idiocy, the book is the (dare I say it?) Bible for people like my brother who will believe anything they read if it’s couched in scripture.

He was also one of the sponsors of the Marshall-Newman amendment, which made same-sex marriage in Virginia unconstitutional.

He once said of a bill that would have outlawed the dispensing of Plan B on college campuses in Virginia, “We have no business passing this garbage out and making these co-eds chemical Love Canals for these frat house playboys in Virginia. We have no business passing this stuff out.” (Love that double entendre, Bob!)

When he overwhelmingly lost the vote for chairman of the Virginia Immigration Commission, he would not relinquish the seat, and some reports state that the gavel had to be wrestled away from him.

He is a god damned nutcase. And he keeps getting re-elected. This is funny for a second, and then it’s just sad and disturbing. How the hell is there any hope for this country, for anyone, when men like him, who thrive on misinformation and theatrical misrepresentation of everything, are in power?

I’ll grant you that most of the members of the Virginia General Assembly know this man is a complete whackjob; you should hear them when one of his crazy-ass bills comes before them in subcommittee. It’s like they’re talking to a child on the verge of a tantrum.

Back to the matter at hand: disabled people are a curse, a punishment from God on high for your transgressions. I know so many people who would vehemently disagree with this. What’s more, the hypocrisy of his statement is almost tangible: disabled people are worth less than other people, but fetuses/unborn Americans/the umbillically challenged/whatever are worth just the same as the already born!

There’s been a huge outcry locally for Marshall to apologize or resign. He’s done the former, saying that his statement was taken out of context. I can tell you first hand that it was not, as I was at the press conference where he said it.

Even the Family Foundation has come out and disagreed with him, and they’re almost as backwards as he is. But still: HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED.

My brain hurts.

*I’m talking about this guy and his ilk. If you’re pro-life, you’re not automatically an asshole, but when you try to push your beliefs onto me, I stop being so forgiving.

“Sack of horrors” is the perfect way to describe him.

My wife has cerebral palsy. She was born in the early ’60s to an unwed teen who gave her up for adoption. Perhaps Marshall’s god was preemptively punishing my wife for any prospective future abortions. Or maybe he wanted her to be aborted. Theology can be such a sticky wicket.

I’m guessing Bob’s mom aborted the one just before him.

How is this nutjob still getting elected? Does he go door to door in Virginia giving voters bottles of bourbon? Does he do coat hanger drives, where he swaps out everyone’s wire hangers for plastic ones?

I tend to forget these types of people are still out there, and then it really freaks me out when they’re in some sort of powerful position.

My teenaged niece’s horrible attitude makes so much more sense now that I consider it in light of my sister’s three abortions. Finally, some answers.

This makes perfect sense. My mother gave up her first child for adoption, so I didn’t become disabled until I was an adult.

This means Sarah Palin aborted one, doesn’t it?

I should also note that I work in the same building as him, which is why I’m so angry all the time.

    That’s debatable.

    I wish I had a fetus
    That I could abort.
    I abort the fetus
    I abort it for sport.

    I get knocked up,
    And throw it right out.
    I won’t raise it up,
    Don’t have no doubt.

    But when I grow tired
    Of aborting the kids,
    One will be born,
    Not wishing it did.

    And Bob Marshall,
    Will be proven correct.
    That god hates them all,
    After siblings vivisec’d.

    But Bob Marshall’s immune,
    from his own theorem.
    As he is a boon,
    Of his mother’s rectum.

@Sarcastro: again with the poems! If you do not stop, I will graduate from mere admirer to full-blown stalker. But don’t worry overmuch; I’ll just need a cot in the corner and I’ll be happy to cook for you and Mrs. Sarcastro, do your laundry, feed the animals. Doesn’t that sound fun???

There’s a very complex calculus afoot here.

The first child born after mother had one abortion will have a slightly substandard IQ, like that of a grocery bagger or New Jersey gas station attendant.

Two abortions gets you an avid reader of Dan Brown books.

Three = your average conspiracy theorist.

Four makes for a child who eats paste well into adulthood and considers reading a passtime exclusively for homosexuals.

Five nets a compulsive public masturbator who believes that fetuses are indeed snowflakes.

Six’ll get you a baby who, upon reaching adulthood, thinks the moon landing was faked but Sarah Palin’s opinions about the Constitution are reliable.

Seven is the number of abortions that will get you a U.S. Rep.

    Eight = U.S. Senator.

Nine will produce a child who, when he or she matures, will believe Tiger Woods when he says, “You’re the only one, baby.”

Ten creates an individual who not only has the mental incapacity to draw a correlation between a woman having an abortion and the likelihood of her offspring being developmentally disabled, but is a position to give voice to the thought and have his voice heard.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/katekate/ katekate is squared

    @Sarcastro: 11 gets you George W. Bush.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/katekate/ katekate is squared

@LL: Yeah, I’m feeling generous. And I DO know people who aren’t actively anti-choice, but think abortion is wrong. They, however, think it’s still a woman’s right to choose. So I guess that’s who I’m talking about.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/sarcastro/ Sarcastro

And 12, KateKate, will get you the kind of asshole who swallows Marshall’s shit and says it tastes like ice cream.

Just another reason to be oh so proud to be a Virginian! Oh, and the fact that my son is borderline brilliant even after my abortion, performed right here in Virginia when I was 17, seems to disprove his theory.

In today’s Virginian-Pilot, he says he “regrets his poorly chosen words,” all the while pointing to some “medical studies which have shown the problems induced abortions cause to subsequent, wanted pregnancies.” Please produce these studies, Mr. Marshall. Or are they hiding away in that same file with the “study” that tried to link abortions to breast cancer?

Our new governor, Bob McDonnell, wants to cut all funding to Planned Parenthood here in Virginia, thus his first act of trying to run his Catholic agenda, not exactly a surprise. That’s right; cutting funding to an organization who is providing health care to people who can no longer afford it because of our shitty economy is really going to help! Cut off that free birth control so that those who can afford it the least are forced to give birth to any fetuses they may incur and take care of them with even less money and health services.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/mediahohoho/ mediahohoho

How concern trollish is it of Republicans to speak of some sinister liberal plot to kill African Americans when their policies seem designed almost exclusively to keep the same population group impoverished, addicted, underserved, uneducated, uninsured to disenfranchised? Want to help some kids who didn’t get aborted get educations and make a better life for themselves? Roll up your sleeves, dick.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/katekate/ katekate is squared

@Gerbils: The study he’s referring to was one from VCU that found that women who had abortions had a higher risk of pre-term birth or low birth weight, which does not equal disabilities. The conclusion of the study, in fact, was simply that doctors should consider previous abortion as a risk factor for these two things. So, you know, maybe there are sometimes detrimental aftereffects of abortion; however, we allow elective, unnecessary medical procedures from which people die all the time.

Oh, also, I forgot: this guy was the patron of the so-called Health Care Freedom Act that passed both houses, which would “exempt” Virginians from any mandate for health insurance that the federal government passes. LOL.

Hahahaha, sorry, also this: he sponsored a bill this year (it failed) that basically screamed “WHERE’S OBAMA’S BIRTH CERTIFICATE?!” The bill would have required a written statement from every candidate for every office in the state that he or she meets the requirements for holding that office (i.e., if you’re running for president, you’d better not have been born in Indonesia!). Hilarious.

I’m inclined to agree with you guys over Marshall, but without accurate statistical data, I have no way of knowing that nature isn’t exacting some sort of vengeance as it will do from time to time.

    @Kate2: You’re dead wrong:

“11 gets you George W. Bush.”

There’s no way that Barbara Bush had sex 11 whole times, and she had three children after him. I’m maxing her out at two abortions prior to having W. That’s a maximum of six TOTAL sexual encounters.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/gerbilsinlove/ gerbilsinlove

Kate: Then would the many women who need D&Cs after a miscarriage also be included in that study? Because it’s the same procedure. I’m married to a family practice doc – I read his medical journals, and honestly, one study from one school isn’t enough to be conclusive. I know many, many women who have abortions and none of them have had problems giving birth later in life; yes, that’s anecdotal information, but sometimes anecdotal is just as accurate. I call bullshit on this study. Are the women who had these abortions low-income or very young women? They are the ones more likely to have low birth weight or pre-term births. Who are these women? What are there ages, their socio-economic statuses, their own health, their access to health care?

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/gerbilsinlove/ gerbilsinlove

Chill: Vengeance for what exactly? Why would vengeance be necessary or appropriate? We remove the cancers mother nature gave us; is vengeance necessary for that, too?

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/bjonston/ BJonston

Gimme five bucks and I’ll give you a “study” that says whatever you want it to say. What a fucking douchebag. Whatever.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/chillbearlatrigue/ Chillbear Latrigue

@Gerbs: This is what the link to the news article said:

“Republican Virginia State Delegate Bob Marshall said at a press conference last week that God is taking “vengeance” on parents who have had abortions by making their other children disabled, according to the News Leader in Central Virginia.”

I bolded “vengeance,” in case someone was just casually reading the comments. He said something later about nature too.

Anyway, my whole comment was a joke. There’s nothing to read between the lines. I promise.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/katekate/ katekate is squared

@Gerbils: Yeah, the study isn’t all that convincing. And even if it were, you’re right–it doesn’t include miscarriages, which are basically nature’s abortions. So it’s sort of bunk, but that was the study he was talking about.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/gerbilsinlove/ gerbilsinlove

Kate, Chill: Which is just more proof of what an asshat he is. I’m sure he agrees with Pat Robertson that nature was getting vengeance on Haiti, as well. I simply don’t understand the need to anthropomorphize the Earth and it’s weather systems that these idiots do. Plates shift. Winds blow. Lava boils and spills.

I see these studies and they make my blood boil. You can read anything into just about any “study” to get your desired outcome.

And this guy: how does he keep getting elected? Do people just not pay attention to what he’s doing or saying? Is he casting some sort of devil-spell at the polls? Paying people off? Baffling.

While a group of us were doing the Race for the Cure last fall we encountered many protesters on the route. One MAN (aren’t they a l w a y s men?) had a sign that read: “Abortion causes breast cancer.” And then his sign listed some sort of psalm or somesuch… Grrrrr. I was so enraged. Really? This guy had to come out of his hole and stand in front of thousands of people walking by and declare such B.S.? So, I yelled at him: “MEN GET BREAST CANCER TOO!” I didn’t wait to hear his answer – I could barely look at him, but I did feel a sense of satisfaction.

Pro-life but not pro-birth. None of those people care about them when they get here. Then it’s fend for yourself and then grow up and go off to war and we’ll kill you then.

Aggghhhh! This is another reason I hate the backwoods attitude of Virginia, and that is saying a lot since I was born in Texas. It is fuckups like this guy, plus our new wonderful “manifesto” Governor. This is a state where it is still legal to drive with an open container. Grimace. Grimace.

Across the Potomac, they are busy outlawing trans-fats in Maryland and recognizing same-sex marriage in DC, and in Virginia we a barely get a smoking ban passed in between the cocktail happy hours on the beltway.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/ BookishLookish

@’Doo: OK, if you don’t mind telling us, WHERE on God’s green earth did this happen? Please let me know confidentially if you prefer. Because I am going to have to call my girls at Komen up and talk tactics. This is completely unacceptable and rotten tomatoes will have to be carried during the next race and that could take a bit of planning as they can be cumbersome, etc. But that guy with the sign? Next time his sign is getting blasted, and his woman-hating ass too if he doesn’t duck.
