BJonston’s Guide To A Romantic Evening Using Jazz And Bubble Bath

January 7, 2010 in ListSmoker, Music

Ok friends, check this out. It’s cold outside. Maybe it’s snowing. Maybe you want to stay in and cuddle with your special someone. Maybe you just want to stay in and get fucked up and maybe cuddle with yourself.

Either way, the next time you’re feeling romantic, do this and let me know how it goes.

Ingredients:

- You and if you can/want to, one or more romantically inclined partner(s)

- Bathtub and bubble bath.

- Alcoholic beverage of your choice and/or your preferred smoking material.

- Candles

- Access to music (iTunes works well to access the music) and a sound playing device of some sort (i.e. an iPod with speakers).

Instructions:

(i) (This is the most important part) make the following mix of Jazz songs, most of which are available on iTunes. Arrange them in the order in which they appear below:

1. The Maids of Cadiz—Miles Davis—Miles Ahead

2. La Paloma Azul—Dave Brubeck—Love Songs

3. These Foolish Things—Chet Baker Quartet—Jazz in Paris. Vol. 53: Chet Baker Quartet Plays Standards

4. Danny Boy—Bill Evans—Bill Evans For Lovers

5. The Nearness of You—Stan Getz—More West Coast Jazz

6. Moon Dreams—Miles Davis—Birth of The Cool

7. But Beautiful—Bill Evans—Bill Evans For Lovers

8. Tonight I Shall Sleep With a Smile on My Face—Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto—Getz/Gilberto (Disc 2).

9. Django—Modern Jazz Quintet—Django

10. My Man’s Gone Now—Bill Evans—Sunday at the Village Vanguard

11. Autumn in New York— Chet Baker Quartet—Jazz in Paris. Vol. 53: Chet Baker Quartet Plays Standards

12. Flamenco Sketches—Miles Davis—Kind of Blue

13. Changes—Miles Davis & Milt Jackson Quintet—Miles Davis & Milt Jackson Quintet/Sextet

14. You Go to My Head—Chet Baker Quartet—Jazz in Paris. Vol. 53: Chet Baker Quartet Plays Standards

(ii) When you get home from work on Friday, fill the bathtub and add bubbles.

(iii) Light some candles and dim the lights.

(iv) Open a bottle of wine (I prefer red but white works too, if that’s your thing. Also—beer, bourbon or Scotch can be used as well, depending on your preference).

(v) Get in the tub with your honey (or by yourself if that’s your thing) and play the above-referenced jazz mix. Sip wine/beer/whiskey or any other beverage of your choice. You may also choose to smoke something, if that’s your thing.

(vi) Sit back and enjoy!

Although this does sound much, much nicer, does it work if I get wasted on Miller High Life and listen to prog rock while taking a shower? I have to work with what I’ve got, after all.

Kate, darling: whatever floats your boat, sweetie. This just happens to do it for me and Mrs Jonston.

I like that WS is now providing helpful guides such as this. Good choice of music. Next I would like you to explain how we get/define/receive “THe Look of Love” as ABC sang about it in the 8o’s.

God damn, BJon. You are one tasteful bastard. I am going to entitle this the BJon playlist in my iPhone.

Thanks Chillbear. Glad you can dig it!

    No-one laugh.

    15. “Hawk Talk” by Coleman Hawkins

I simply cannot help but smile and slowly remove garments when that tune plays.

@BookishLookish: I hope they never play that when you’re at a street fair. [Heads to iTunes]

@Strawberry Shortcake: Using champagne would be sticky, and milk is nice, but it gets expensive.

This makes me wish my bathtub was not covered in a layer of perpetual grime. I actively seek out bathtubs when Monsieur Lama and I book hotel rooms, as they are my favorite place to, er, relax. However, I have never considered a musical accompaniment. Note taken; thanks, BJ!

@BJon: I am ridiculously ignorant of music. I liked some of the names on your list. I’m downloading them one at a time in order without listening to them. I have just been doing it here and there. When I get to one that I don’t like, I have vowed to stop. So far, the first four are excellent.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/bjonston/ BJonston

Thanks, Chillbear, for the complement. I’m happy to hear you’re enjoying the playlist. Let me know if you hit one that misses the mark.

Thought our Mr. BJonston couldn’t be more dashing, then he shows his superb musical tastes too. You had me at Django.

Just reading this was a lovely little imaginative getaway, evocative and a reminder of how the simplest pleasures are often the very best ones.

Shame I had to fire my bath butler. But it’s the economy, and he used to just stand in there
in the dark the other 23 hours a day. It creeped me out.

a champagne bath does sound sticky but also tingly!

    milk would be gross.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/bjonston/ BJonston

Chillbear: These tracks were all my favorites at one point or another but my current favorite is no. 4. Bill Evans doing Danny Boy. You can almost feel the heroin he must have been on or dreaming of when he recorded that track.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/mama-penguino-2-2-2/ Mama Penguino

Mr. Penguino always put on some hard-core Beethoven in the early days and I will admit, I found myself caught up in the intensity, especially during the 9th.
