The Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band – Oh, The Wind And Rain

November 4, 2009 in Audiosmoker

While I look for a job, I plan to become reacquainted with my music collection. Today I had the following discs shuffling on the hi-fi: Dave Brubeck (Ken Burns Jazz compilation), Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band (Almost Acoustic), Lucinda Williams (Honey Bee), James Brown (In The Jungle Groove), and R.E.M. (Eponymous). Anywho, I wanted to share this song from JGAB with you all. To me, it’s beautiful and morbid, all at the same time. The video is from a Garcia and David Grisman show.

Oh, The Wind And The Rain

Lyrics: Traditional
Music: Traditional

There were two sisters came walkin’ down the stream
Oh the wind and rain
The one behind pushed the other one in
Cryin’ oh the dreadful wind and rain

Johnny gave the youngest a gay gold ring
Oh the wind and rain
Didn’t give the oldest one anything
Cryin’ oh the dreadful wind and rain

They pushed her into the river to drown
Oh the wind and rain
And watched her as she floated down
Cryin’ oh the dreadful wind and rain

Floated ’till she came to a miller’s pond
Oh the wind and rain
Mama oh father there swims a swan
Cryin’ oh the dreadful wind and rain

The miller pushed her out with a fishing hook
Oh the wind and rain
Drew that fair maid from the brook
Cryin’ oh the dreadful wind and rain

He left her on the banks to dry
Cryin’ oh the wind and rain
And a fiddlin’ fool come passing by
Cryin’ oh the dreadful wind and rain

Out of the woods came a fiddler fair
Oh the wind and rain
Took thirty strands of her long yellow hair
Cryin’ oh the dreadful wind and rain

And he made a fiddle bow of her long yellow hair
Oh the wind and rain
He made a fiddle bow of her long yellow hair
Cryin’ oh the dreadful wind and rain

He made fiddle pegs of her long finger bones
Oh the wind and rain
He made fiddle pegs of her long finger bones
Cryin’ oh the dreadful wind and rain

And he made a little fiddle of her breast bone
Oh the wind and rain
The sound could melt a heart of stone
Cryin’ oh the dreadful wind and rain

And the only tune that the fiddle would play
Was oh the wind and rain
The only tune that the fiddle would play
Was oh the dreadful wind and rain

A studio version of the song, but I don’t think it has the same soul:

I totally need to score some finger bones for my mandolin pegs. Jealous.

MHHH: I can get you a finger bone, dude.

I assume you enjoy yourself some David Grisman? I love his wobbly head.

@Captain: whoa, whoa, slow down on that finding a job thing, dude.

I kid. Sorry to learn that you’re not working. Is the market in St. Louis ok for your line of work?

I just finished a biography of Jerry Garcia (Garcia : An American Life) , and it was facinating. He juggled so many bands at the same time; I don’t know how he kept them all straight. He is a huge favorite of mine.

Cap’n: The Dawg is awesome. And I’m such a newbie, the first album I had with him was given to us when Owen was born, the accurately titled Garcia/Grisman disc, “Not For Kids Only.”

Me, I’m just trying to think of good Ben & Jerry’s flavors for the rest of the groups. So far I have , Dave Blueberrybeck , Lucinda WillYums with Sweet Whiskey-Flavored Pellets, James BrownBread and R.E.M&Ms.

@Captain, thank you for this. I almost fainted from goosebumps. I’ve always been kind of a punkie/alt girl but “Old and In the Way” is one of my faves of all time–listened to 500 times, especially when I lived in the mountains with my banjo-playing sister.

I love this song too. Lovely.

    GL finding a job.

@Frack: Market is down, except for government-funded (fed, state, county, local) work. We didn’t do that at my old work. The firms that do these jobs are hesitant to hire someone who has not had a lot of experience with them.’

@Fifi: I read that back when it came out. He was addicted to playing live (among other things).

@MHHH: I enjoy Shady Grove and So What (both with Garcia) and I can’t recall what I’ve got of the David Grisman Quintet, but they are also great live. Also, The Pizza Tapes with Grisman, Tony Rice, and Garcia is tasty.

@BSK: Old and In the Way is exceptional. You should check out their other two discs. I had the pleasure of seeing Peter Rowan, Tony Rice, and Vassar Clements in an intimate theater a few years before Vassar passed. Exquisite.

CapFan, I already told you, you have a job waiting for you in New York. Now come on.
