Debbie Downer Does DC

January 22, 2009 in Politics, Sad

Debbie Downer FlagI have never been able to stand the Debbie Downer type. This probably stems from being raised by one.

But I find the Obama Buzzkillers to be the most infuriating of all.

I am in D.C. I have seen things this week that will stay with me for a lifetime. Elderly African-Americans weeping with joy, and when I stopped to ask them why, telling me stories of being raised in the Deep South, knowing people who were lynched, remembering the Klan being around, being afraid to make eye contact with white people.

Young inter-racial couples, clearly already color-blind, but revelling in the notion that now perhaps much of their country was too.

Old hippies, wistfully recalling Robert F. Kennedy and how, after his assassination, they gave up believing they’d ever see another politician who would inspire them with messages of peace and hope, who would proudly herald in a new era of political idealism.

Vietnam War vets vehemently opposed to the war in Iraq and sickened that the U.S. had apparently learned no lessons from their own terrible conflict.

Old church ladies who used to vote Republican but were so sickened by the Bush/Cheney years that they switched allegiances. Originally Hillary Clinton supporters, they were carrying Secretary of State Clinton signs and were delighted to watch Obama take his oath.

I have been in tears quite a few times this week, hearing stories that made me feel small in terms of the adversities I’ve had to confront in my life by comparison, and yet also unbelievably enriched.

I don’t care where you are on the political spectrum — I have voted Liberal, Conservative and NDP in my country (that’s basically, for you Yanks, Democrat, Republican and Socialist Lite). My feelings of joy this week haven’t had much to do with politics — they’ve had to do with having my faith in humanity restored. I saw so many acts of kindness to strangers this week, everyone just coming together, all colors, ages and nationalities, to celebrate a moment in history.

Crowd control wasn’t ideal. People often waited in line for hours to get onto the Mall, only to be turned away in the end. But no one got angry. One crowd control worker, in fact, apologized to a huge group of people for having to turn them away, and she was assured it was OK. “We know it’s not your fault, thanks anyway,” one woman shouted her way. “YOU’RE WEL-COME!” the guard replied joyously, tossing her head back, throwing up her arms and singing the words with exuberance and joy.

And yet you hear and see them. Questioning what all the hype is about. Quarreling with the notion that Obama’s win is significant. Predicting he’s going to be a total failure, a major disappointment. Insisting that he’s not really a black man (this one might drive me craziest of all). Asserting that post-racialism is just bullshit, nothing will change. Saying that his inaugural address sucked. Blogging from D.C., pulsing with life and emotion and joy and two million stories, but only posting pictures of yourself in ball gowns and making Derek Zoolander faces. These are the Debbie Downers who just floor and stun me with their soullessness, their blind cynicism or their bitterness.

For just a moment, can all of us come together like those millions in D.C. and recognize this moment for what it is in a country with a history of slavery and segregation? Are we so beaten down by the events of the past decade that we don’t trust joy? If so, I propose we shake off our default pessimism for a week or two, and revel in a beautiful moment in time. Hopefully there will be many more to come, but if not, at least we had this.

Obama’s Inauguration Speech included amongst the most awkward use of metaphor yet witnessed at the Presidential level. Parts of the speech were at complete loggerheads with other parts. Parts of it were so naive that some live bloggers were contemptuously sputtering when the words were barely out of Obama’s mouth. We’re not exactly sure how Grover Cleveland became an American twice, but if you say so Obama. A little bit of fact-checking might have done wonders. If it makes me a Debbie Downer to body check Obama into the stands on his math, throw me into the penalty box. I don’t allow innumeracy simply because I voted for the man.

Much of the passion and emotion of what you say is poignant and accurate and the reason I signed up for an Obama Nation. There’s no question Obama is replacing an outlaw and an idiot. Yet Obama himself has yet to impress anyone as a mental giant with his few official actions thus far. Bungling the second taking of the Oath of Office was absolutely inexcusable. If I had committed that sort of mental mistake as a ten-year old, my dad would have removed my Citizenship Activity Badge from my Webelos uniform and told me I could have it back when I earned it. I love Obama, but it will occasionally come across as tough love and I will verbally kick him in the ass for simple-minded mistakes.

  • Trixie

How did he bungle the second oath? I was e-mailed the pool report last night — what are you talking about?

Debbie Dagrolord, give the man a chance, Jesus. Or give it a couple of weeks, you know? You’re not impressed with him moving to overturn the Bush attack on abortion rights, for example, in his first day in office? Or moving to close Gitmo? What else would you like him to be doing that would prove to your satisfaction that he’s a Mental Giant?

Both Bill O and Sean Hannity have adopted this weird “I’m not an idealogue and it’s not good to tear down the new president in times of trouble but he’s a socialist I swear to God he is. I’m not being a meanie but watch out America! These liberal commies are going to screw you!”

So it’s all this meaningless, “I’m really not trying to stir up trouble here…” followed by the stirring of trouble.

They suck. Chris Wallace sucks. Rush Limbaugh sucks most of all.

Their President got us into this mess and our President will have to get us out but not before they pick at him. They were both picking at things Obama hasn’t even done yet.

These guys are unpatriotic in that they are continuing to try to destroy this country at a time when unity is needed and called for.

I think everyone should call them out on their anti-American stances.

    Asshats.

  • Trixie

Are you actually talking about the lack of a fucking Bible? Jesus, man. Fret not, I am in D.C., I cover this daily, I have been up all night writing about Kennedy and the second oath.

I cannot believe that people are going to allow the right to turn the lack of a Bible for the second oath, which was done merely as a precautionary measure, into a scandal. What bullshit.

And by the way, piss off with your insulting, condescending tone.

  • Dagrolord

And by the way, piss off with your insulting, condescending tone..

Try following your own advice, Oblivia.

Let me know when you’ve finally figured out it’s less ‘what the Right will try to do’ and more ‘what the Right shouldn’t have had the opportunity to do in the first place.’

Easy with the ad hominem bullshit here – and no name calling, please.

This isn’t Gawker. Play fucking nice.

  • Trixie

And the intelligent members of the right seem to recognize this supposed scandal for what it is — bullshit. But I guess we should be assailing Obama anyway, and be influenced by a bunch of dumbass, sore-losing rightwingers who are looking at anything to use as proof he is stupid and/or a secret Muslim Jesus-hating Commie:

  • Trixie

Sorry Virus, but my pads are scorched. I write about the pain and misery of Debbie Downers and one shows up to shit on the post based on really flawed logic and doing it insultingly as well. I don’t get it.

  • Trixie

Dagrolord, I have been in this business for 25 years. As soon as we stop ALLOWING the lunatics to tell us what stories are, and reporting on their reactions as though it’s news, the better off we’ll all be. And I mean that from all sides. Oblivious, no? Pollyanna, nope. Sick of the same old tired shit of allowing crazies to dictate what stories are, yes.

I am sorry this got so heated but I saw things this week that changed me and how I perceive Americans. I heard stories that I will never forget. To be on this guy right out of the gates over cosmetics is just infuriating to me.

Everyone – by all means disagree with each other to the point of violence at your desk, but don’t resort to name-calling, or trying not to engage the other’s argument – it just negates your own.

  • Dagrolord

    @Trixie

I’m very hopeful Obama tightens his headgear.

  • Trixie

I know, I saw that. It’s just a fabricated scandal concocted by the loons. And you know, those people lost. Let them whinge and cry all they want. Fuck them.

  • Trixie

I apologized, Dagrolord, for getting so heated. Are we going to drop it or are you now going to come after me all day long?

This is something I feel passionately about. I got pissed. I am sorry. You too might want to check your tendency to imply someone’s an ignorant fool because they disagree with your logic.

@Dagrolord: Swearing is fine and dandy by me, especially if done with style and passion.

    Name calling isn’t.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/fishnetsandcigarettes/ Fishnets & Cigarettes

From a purely legal standpoint, the oath is not “necessary” to be president. The President-Elect bame President at noon, and the ceremony is just that, derived from our love of pomp and circumstance handed down from our British forefathers. (Seriously. I love the guy, but I did expect someone to hand his a crown, a sceptre, and and ermine robe).

And because we have separation of Church and State in this country, neither the Bible, nor “so help me God” is required as part of the oath. A President-elect can chose to either “swear” or “affirm”.

As for the grammar in the speech, perhaps i “misunderestimated” it. Can we remember, please, that these people are human? I prefer to have a really smart, sincere dude as President rather than a by-the-rules grammarian.

To judge a Presidency on the first 100 hours is stupid, especially when the first 24 of those involved multiple changes of clothing.

Lastly, there are too many people who still call Bush “YOUR president”. Just as Obama is everyone’s head guy, so was Bush. I didn’t vote for him, didn’t like him, but we were stuck with him, and hopefully, his Presidency was a lesson to all of us. We won’t make that mistake again, but we all bear the responsibility.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/jerilyn/ jerilyn

If we’re getting pissy at Obama for the bungling of the first or second or third or fourth or fifth oath of office, this guy does not stand a chance. The oath is UNNECESSARY PEOPLE! Get a clue, get a grip and MOVE ON.

This country was almost destroyed from the top down. We have HUGE pressing issues and the fucking oath isn’t one of them. Can we support this President for one day at least? JEZZUS!

  • Trixie

    Thanks, Jerilyn. What you said!

Also, the “no Bible” manufactured outrage from moral superiors like Rush Limbaugh doesn’t seem to be gaining any traction anywhere. I have talked to White House people and Constitutional lawyers, even right-wing ones, are assuring them it’s a non-issue. Maybe they’ll do it a THIRD time just to shut up the loons, but it doesn’t sound like it.

  • Helman

Poor Rachel Dratch. Is she to be the face of Debbie Downer? Because that’s a tough cross to bear.

  • http://subjecttochange.tumblr.com/ Meg

Play fucking nice“? I assume you’re referring to dry humping. And yes, on occasion, it can be fun in a sort of I’m nostalgic for eighth grade kind of way. But actual fucking beats play fucking any day.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/fishnetsandcigarettes/ Fishnets & Cigarettes

@Trixie: The first one was so beautiful, and so much fun, maybe they’ll do it every day. Like the Pledge of Allegiance.

  • http://subjecttochange.tumblr.com/ Meg

But in all seriousness, I find the oath business to be beyond ridiculous. And I don’t mind people who aren’t totally high on hope, or whatever, but there will be plenty of time for criticism and backlash. Over actual issues. Not ceremonial bullshit. So maybe pace yourselves. You don’t want to get burnt out to soon. You’ve got eight long years of this guy. (Hee hee.)

  • Dagrolord

I can support the President even while correctly observing that he could have done a particular action in a more nearly sentient manner.

It’s my intention to scoff at Obama with the license that we typically exercise here when we scoff at mortals. If this is a de facto transgression, so be it. I’ll accept my punishment(s).

My issue isn’t the Constitutional correctness of the missing Bible. My issue is that the missing Bible was unnecessarily divisive.

  • Dagrolord

    @VirusWithShoes

I only saw you use @Dagrolord. Apparently I was in the dispute myself. As the obvious dissident, I’ll accept a self-imposed exile from your demonstrated impartiality.

    Best Wishes.

Dagro & Trixie: No one go anywhere. We’re good. We’re nervous. We’re on edge. We’re happy. It’s okay. And we all know for eight years this shit is going to follow us. It’s unfortunate. This was a fucking blunder. But it’s like being misunderstood by someone who hates you. At some point you just say, fuck it. I’m not repeating or explaining myself one more time.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/viruswithshoes/ VirusWithShoes

  • Trixie

Virus: Yes, I don’t quite get going back and editing your comments. That’s what I don’t like about that feature, actually. You should have the option to delete but not to edit so that it looks like what you first said, and what people are reacting to, isn’t what you said. It’s dishonest.

  • vaquero

Fishnets: Ha! 4 years. You are making me giggle! There is no other choice. No collective. Eight years. That is all.

Hi guys, Aaron here. Helman: Rachel played Debbie Downer in eps of SNL, so yes, she will be her for the rest of her life! But that’s okay: we know she knows that’s not the only character we’ll remember her for. There was also, um, uh… hey, Rachel Dratch was AWESOME!

But seriously, she’s cool. She totes got screwed by the 30 Rock crew. Makes me sad.

And Trixie: great piece. Good to know you’re a fellow journo (in my case, EX-journo) too.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/viruswithshoes/ VirusWithShoes

@Trixie: The edit function is for 5 minutes only, and generally allows correction of typos, etc. After the 5 minutes are done, that’s it – the comment stays, unless I get an email asking me to delete it.

When I mentioned “retroactively-edit the history”, I meant that Dagrolord had not recognised his own comment which included name-calling at yourself, and instead felt like the victim for whatever reason – his attempt at calling himself a “dissident” was negated by the fact that he had initially resorted to name calling.

I’m all for arguments, as I am for discussion, but varying forms of “fuck you” really don’t help anybody when said arguments or discussions are either lost or quelled by an agreement to disagree.

And I’m certainly not having anyone call anyone else “Pollyanna” just because they disagree with their statement. Especially when they don’t back it up with a further attempt at discussion.

(Does anyone else smile like a giddy imp when the log in screen pops up so perkily?)

If I remember correctly, eight years ago an election was “possibly” stolen and the democratic candidate conceded rather than further divide this country. This week a few words were mumbled out of sequence and the same pirates now want to create a national scandal and strip the President of his right to office?

Look, these talking heads have to come up with something to justify their existence. There were no arrests during the event. The cost was the same adjusted for inflation and excluding security as past inaugurals. The majority of the nation was happy and hopeful for a day.

If they can’t find something to blow into ginormous proportions and justify covering it LIVE 24/7 IN SCREAMING SCROLLING HEADLINES, they will have to face the reality of becoming unnecessary and unemployed, just like the rest of us.

  • Trixie

Well thanks, Virus, but I got snarky too and I am sorry for it. We want this to be a happy place.

And yes, that’s true about the five minute time limit to alter your comments. That’s a great feature. I spelled someone’s name wrong and was immediately able to go back and fix it.

  • http://wordsmoker.com/help/members-3/viruswithshoes/ VirusWithShoes

@Trixie: I’ve had complaints about the Edit Function. I’m going to post on the main page and you can all discuss amongst yourselves whether or not to keep it, or amend it.

Currently, the ability to edit your comment for 5 minutes after posting is switched off.

I’ll post something in a second.

I very much enjoyed reading this thoughtful, reverent empirical account of the tremendous unifying effect of Barack Obama’s Presidential inauguration. However, the comments section, in direct contrast to the inspiring article, looks like a Gawker FNFF thread at 3am after everyone’s had WAY too much to drink/toke.

As a biracial woman born the year after the last of the anti-miscegenation laws were repealed in the U.S., I agree that the inauguration of President Obama warrants more respect – if not outright awe for its far-reaching significance – than it is generally receiving.

    Excellent article, Trixie. Thanks.

  • BC

Apropos of nothing, I was thinking recently about whether Obama, while courting the Republican minority, is doing the work necessary to keep his own party from slitting each other’s throats. I hope we actually do have a little bit of a honeymoon before all the message boards and comment threads I stumble across are marked by brawls over small stuff.

And as for his address? No, it wasn’t as amazing as some of his other speeches. But reaching out to the Muslim world and reassuring U.S. allies that friendships would be repaired and that America was founded on principles that made it better than how it had been behaving under Bush — I thought that was really significant.

  • http://sistermarymartha.tumblr.com SisterMaryMartha

@Trix. It may have not been his best speech- but I felt a difference in it- as opposed to some of his others. There was a sense of very real emotion and passion that I sometimes find lacking. OR it could be because I was already crying. Who knows? I loved it.

  • Trixie

Drag: My calling you Debbie was in homage to the title of the post, get it? If Virus had been the first Debbie to show up, I would have called him DebbieWithShoes. It wasn’t meant to be insulting so much as cheeky. I apologize. As I have done earlier in this thread. I am thinking it is time you let it go, no? In the spirit of hope and optimism?

What happened over the past 24 hours?

Look. Again. You’re not reading the comments, you’re angry, you’re playing the victim for some reason, and it’s getting desperately dull. You’re not even reading my comment:

You post a comment of the dialog that is not remotely germane to your follow-up comments.

The only one losing an argument is you, and that’s why you’re deceitfully quoting one remark and then responding to another. Try being more transparent.

And you are utterly misrepresenting my retraction of my article- and I find it revelatory of who and what you are that bring up a private conversation in a public forum in quest of a point. Does private correspondence in any way strike you as something that might involve confidentiality? Apparently not. Your betrayals of courtesy to me will eventually become your betrayals of others. Give it time.

But seeing as how you’ve chosen to publicly violate any notion of the privacy of personal email, let’s instead address the facts. I wanted clarification and acknowledgment of publishing rights, and with your typical arrogance you couldn’t be bothered to respond. I guess everybody just has to have complete faith in you? I guess it’s not enough that we contribute pro bono, we also have to have accept ambiguity of further proprietary use of our work?

The more you equivocate and dissemble VWS, the more an unflattering portrait of your mind and character at work is revealed to the discerning.
