Wordsmoker Exclusive: Serbian Commenters Tackle Blagojevich!

December 11, 2008 in Politics, Rants

So did you know that Rod (Milorad, or Rade) Blagojevich is a Serb? Shut up! The Serbian press is covering this story, because Serbia, just like every other country in the world except Russia, is in the thrall of American parochial corruption stories, because the US is the center of the universe, and also, Blagojevich is the Scrappy son of an anti-Communist immigrant from Yugoslavia, and is a Serb. I think I said, shut up. Not to bury the lede (too late!) Wordsmoker has exclusive comments from Belgrade papers online, and they are hilarious. First, though, what does the Chicago Tribune report ?

Oh, here’s a good one, from comments on the Blic site: “Slobo writes: ‘Well, one more piece of evidence that the Americans hate us. They don’t let us steal.’” Haha, they hate us for our freedoms! Wait, there’s more, thanks to wordsmoker’s exclusive reporting. From Politika, the New York Times of Serbia (it used to be Yugoslavia’s Pravda, but now it actually runs a Readers’ digest of the NYT on Sundays), some fabulous comments:

Darko , 10/12/2008, 08:16 Why such fuss over this news. When it happened earlier that an official of Serbian origin was arrested for corruption in Namibia not a word about it was published in newspapers.” Nobody cares about Namibia, Darko. Next!

Dobrivoje , 10/12/2008, 08:36 Haha. Nice start for Obama. This guy is a Serb and a member of the Democratic Party—what else could he be than corrupt. Same as at home! I see you’ve learned Schadenfreude in Serbia! Congratulations! So you have a Democratic party, too? Tell us more!

Madam Tiso, 10/12/2008, 12:08 Had someone told me this photo of Rod was a picture of his statue in the Museum Madam Tussaud, I would believe him. Since when do people look like this? That is apparently possible only in America. For now… Hey, “Madam Tiso”, don’t hate him because he’s beautiful. What are you, the Serbian Perez Hilton? :-) ,

10/12/2008, 12:44 There you have it, our man cannot be corrupted even by Americans. So strong are the genes. Wow. That’s really funny. Odojce ,

10/12/2008, 16:45 Socrates would be more than pleased to learn how democracy has progressed over the millenia. Particularly democracy in the NATO leader country that imposes its self-styled democracy both by peaceful means (through propaganda and dollars) and by brute force (lies and bombs) while everyone and anyone is for sale. Well known are the rules of politics, no one moves up without permission which of course must be purchased. Consequently, democracy is for the 5% of super-rich and powerful in uncompromising fight against the other 95% who are not expected to use their head. Rod is a small fish and cannot be expected to be good at above described democracy. Look, Covece, “Odojce”, is it? “Your mother’s tit-sucker”, really? You are seriously dampening the mood.

Prosrpski Hrvat , 10/12/2008, 17:49 It is true that our politicians cannot be compared to the Western politicians. Ours steal on the local level, theirs on the global. Ours steal millions, theirs billions Jealous much?

IMAM NEMAM, 10/12/2008, 19:18 What nonsense, they arrest the man just because he is a Serb. How long will this global anti-Serb politics going to last? Everyone is against us just because we are the most honest nation on earth. Have I told you lately I love Serbs?

  • H. Totheomo

I love Serbs currently, and I have loved Serbs in the 90′s, when it was cool.

  • H. Totheomo

Ask me if NATO did wrong, and I would agree.

Ask me if Serbs did the same, I would have the same reaction.

Frankly, these examples don’t dissuade me.

  • Zemoralist

@H. Totheomo: Well, equalization is not always a good choice. Let us try this:

Ask me if the US and it’s coalition of the willing did wrong, and I would agree.

Ask me if Iraqies did the same, I would have the same reaction.

Yet, we all know who is the one and the same aggressor in both cases.

@Rosa Luxembourgeoise: I am going to second your judgment that this sampling of comments from Politika is fabulous. But, your work is also fabulous and it shows that the wordsmoker.com has a much more keen sense of what quality commenting is than gawker.com.

@Zemoralist: I couldn’t have done it without Desanka
