DahlELama’s Playlist – I Am Kloot
Published: October 09, 2009
The summer before I started college, I spent my 13th summer at the same camp to which I’d unwillingly dragged my feet for the first time the summer after first grade. I worked as sports staff, teaching hockey and volleyball, and lived with three girls--all friends who were a year younger than I--whom I originally despised but then eventually grew to like in the way we all force ourselves to like people with whom we’re stuck living. All summer, they loved to tell me how when I went to NYU, I was going to meet their friend Mike who was amaaaaaazing.
Whatever. There was no chance in hell I was going to like a friend of theirs.
I met Mike the first or second week of school. He lived a floor above me, looked nothing like I expected, and had clearly gotten more religious over the last year because he was certainly not kissing any girls by the pool at the bungalow colony as per all the stories. I was so surprised that this serious, lanky guy with a cutting sense of humor had been friends with the three dim-witted JAPs I’d lived with all summer that when we met, my first words to him were something along the lines of a disappointed “you’re not God.” Delightful, I know. I make a bad first impression--just ask my husband.
But I digress, because Mike and I ended up becoming really good friends, and I credit him with introducing me to two great bands: The Decemberists, who I really should’ve known anyway, and I Am Kloot. And now, Mike is married, has a baby, and we don’t talk as much as I’d like, but I still listen to I Am Kloot--which I stole off his laptop--on my iPod all the time. They’re one of the only bands I can play in the car who don’t piss off my husband, and I take that as a sign that they’re meant to be shared with the world. So, behold: I Am Kloot.

Good stuff…though I have to admit that a lot of it is the accent. I’m a sucker for it.
(In #1, I like how, instead of a smoke machine, they have a guitarist blowing on a cigarette. Will the ash ever fall off? … Dig the blue eyes in #2.)
I likey.
You kids and your crazy music. In the last two weeks, I have learned more about music than I have in my previous 29 years. What? Anyway, I thank you – DahlE, Panda, etc. This kind of piece makes me realize how sheltered I am!
I actually really like this. Been looking for some new music lately… thanks, DahlE!
That second video is really kind of brilliant. So simple, but to me, really powerful.
So glad you guys are into it. If you’re interested in further listening, try “From Your Favorite Sky,” “Storm Warning,” “Life in a Day,” and “The Same Deep Water as Me.” “Twist” (the first one) and “Sold as Seen” (the last one) are my two faves, but “From Your Favorite Sky” is a close third. (I put up Proof, the middle one, instead, because I was kind of drawn to the video.)
After reading Mama P’s post, I kept waiting for sex to break out here (or maybe Mama P’s post had nothing to do with that)–the girls at camp together, the guy mike. Ok, I’ll try to focus.
