When The River Changes Course

By David Paprocki
Published: March 12, 2009

When the river changes course we should set our sights on the banks.

We should unpack and set up and light fires. This is what we should do. We should light fires and gather wood. We should gather wood. Keep the fires going.

I think this is what we should do.

We should find food. Find food that we can then cook. Cooking and eating are on this agenda, this I can say.

This is what we should do. We should do it for ourselves and not for anyone else. No one has helped us. We help ourselves. We can gather wood. We can light fires. We can cook food. We can do this and we should. When the river changes course, I am sure that these are the things we should do.

Swing that blow, son. Left and right. Kenyon’s not got a lot on you and you have the sneer. Bring it down hard, son. Let it be known that you can light the place on fire. Let them know you can take them down. This is what you should let them know. You can take them down and you can build them fires. This how you earn respect.

Tomorrow there are things we will do. Not all of you. I will choose who will come and who will not come. Notice I did not say who will stay. Either you will come, or you will not. But staying is not on the agenda. No on the agenda for tomorrow. We have things to do tomorrow. Tomorrow you will know. Tomorrow, some of you will never know.

This is what we will do. When the river changes course.

I am confident this is what we will do.

Tomorrow is too soon. I’m not ready.

Can’t I drift a while longer? At least until next week?

But what if there’s beer on the bank? Ice cold. Hmm?

Prophetically, I wrote this before I was laid off.

O! Shit! David needs a drink. Row ashore, row ashore, I see a stash of ice cold beer hidden in the bushes.

Funny you should say that. I’m getting a drink right now. The troll under the bridge smells bad, but he always stocks real potato vodka. And he keeps is cold by tying the bottles to a rope and lets them cool in the river. This is what I should do. I should have a drink. I am sure that drinking is on the agenda tonight.

Scotch has more nutirents and inebriants and what the hell, that covers 2 of the major food groups. Only things missing is salt, sugar, grease, and that comes with wine and beer.
